In the three weeks since we gathered for Take Back the Ball, we’ve faced a rapid-fire onslaught of damaging policy changes. Armed with your generous contributions from the event, the three Rapid Response funds have already moved money to organizations led by people of color on the front-lines of the resistance. Here are some examples of how your donation is making an impact:  

Training anti-islamophobia activists
As we enter a critical moment in the fight against Islamophobia, the Emergent Fund gave $30,000 to MuslimARC to train non-Muslims on what the Muslim community needs from allies to effectively fight anti-Muslim hate. MuslimARC will also train American Muslims on the value of racial justice work and address issues of anti-blackness within Muslim spaces.  

Training black millennials for primetime media
For years, the Brooklyn-based community organization UPROSE hosted small meetings for Sunset Park neighbors interested in sustainability – usually for a few dozen people. After hundreds of people started showing up eager to resist the new administration, The Fighter Fund gave them $15,000 to hire an organizer and design a program to channel this incredible new interest into real power-building. UPROSE will share this model with other grassroots organizations across the country facing similar opportunities to bring racial- and environmental-justice leadership to the forefront.  

Town hall for emerging women activists
The Emergent Fund gave #BlackLivesMatter $30,000 to pilot a rapid response media training program for Black millennial leaders in the first 100 days of the Trump administration. Their aim is to position them as experts on primetime television, radio, and in print. BLM leaders see this program as a direct action, but one in which speaking out serves as an ideological disruption.  

The Women’s March in Washington, DC energized hundreds of thousands of emerging activists. To channel that energy into long term leadership development, The Groundswell Rapid Response Fund gave $5,000 to The National Domestic Workers Alliance to host a town hall for 650 people in-person (with 40,000 people viewing the livestream). Speakers included Alicia Garza, Gloria Steinem, Kimberle Crenshaw, Linda Sarsour, and several Groundswell Fund grantees. This Town Hall was a critical opportunity for grassroots organizations to meet new activists, connect them to ongoing base-building work, and share opportunities to stay involved after the march.
